One Hard Conversation. One Clear Next Step.
A calm, step-by-step playbook for the college conversation you've been dreading, about grades, missed work, or a broken promise.
The Parent Communication & Difficult Conversations Playbook is a downloadable guide plus three private audio episodes, delivered to your email the moment you buy.
- Know what to say first, so the talk doesn't open with a list of everything that went wrong.
- Need to talk tonight? The quick-start page gets you ready without reading every page first.
- Ask for one action your student owns, a deadline, and a set time to check back in.
- Hear three short companion episodes in the car, on a walk, or over the dishes.
You don't need to be good at confrontation. You don't need perfect words. You need a structure, and the words will follow.
Instant delivery by email. No login needed. All sales are final.
Not Sure How to Start, or Tired of Having the Same Conversation?
- Asking "How are classes going?" and getting "fine" for the fifth time this month.
- Opening the student portal at 11 p.m. to find out what your student won't tell you.
- Having the same talk about missed work every few weeks and hearing the same promise.
- Starting the conversation calm, ending it with raised voices, then replaying it all night.
- Watching "Read" show up under your text with no reply.
- Hearing yourself threaten to cut off money or bring them home, when that is the last thing you want.
Hi, I'm Dr. Dagny Rearden.
I'm a college professor. One September, I found out my son was failing college algebra.
He's a capable kid. But he had no set study times for the class, he rushed through the work, and he didn't like the professor.
So we sat down and had the hard conversation. He built a work schedule and made a plan. He talked to his professor, started going to tutoring, and reported back to me every week.
He finished the class with a B. 📈
My job was coaching. His job was the work.
Then I looked at my own classroom and wondered how many of my students had the same problem. Almost nobody hands parents a guide for moving from parent to coach.
From the front of the classroom, I see how academic problems can build. A student gets lost, puts off asking for help, and then has more to explain. Your conversation needs room for both understanding what happened and expecting them to take responsibility for what happens next.
So I wrote this playbook for parents who want to walk into the next hard talk prepared.
Four Steps From Worry to a Plan
- 01.Start with the quick-start page.
Read the CALM Conversation and pick the script closest to what is happening right now.
- 02.Fill in the planner before you talk.
Choose one issue, separate what you know from what you assume, and write your boundary down before emotions run high.
- 03.Have the CALM Conversation.
Connect before correcting, ask for facts, limit the rescue, and make the next step visible.
- 04.Follow up with evidence.
Swap daily texts and portal checks for one 15-minute weekly check-in your student leads.

FAQs
How do I get the playbook and podcast?
Both are delivered to your email right after you buy. No login or account needed.
I need to talk to my student tonight. Will this help in time?
Yes. Start with the quick-start page. Read the CALM Conversation, choose the script closest to your situation, and fill in the Conversation Planner. Come back for the rest later.
Won't scripts sound fake?
The scripts are starting points. Use your own natural language and keep the structure: shared goal, facts, ownership, next step.
My student is hours away. Does this work over the phone?
Yes. A phone or video call works. Pick a set time, keep other distractions away, and use text only to schedule the call, not to have the whole conversation.
What if my student gets very upset or seems unable to cope?
There's a script for that moment. If safety ever feels uncertain, the playbook tells you to pause the academic talk and contact campus support, a crisis resource, or emergency services first. This playbook is not therapy or family counseling.
My co-parent and I don't agree on how to handle this. Will it still help?
It can help you get on the same page before the talk. Use the Conversation Planner together to agree on the one issue, the support you will offer, and the boundary you will hold. If you keep disagreeing about boundaries over time, that is a bigger pattern than one conversation can fix.
Is there a refund?
This is a digital purchase. All sales are final.
Is there more support after this?
Yes. This playbook comes from the College Parent Support System, a membership opening soon. You will find the details inside your playbook.
Imagine walking into the next hard conversation knowing what you'll say first, what you'll ask, and where your role ends. Imagine ending it with one next step your student owns and a day on the calendar to check back in.
